Games are for the players
Video Games are an entertainment medium, they need to be for the players. Just as books, movies, and TV shows want to capture their audience, video games should do the same. My approach to designing a game is to ask myself, "What will the player feel?". It is important to know who the game is being made for.
Playtest and Iterate
One of the important lessons I learned at Full Sail was to playtest often and not being afraid of iteration. Playtesting is what allows me to see if my designs are making sense to the player. Did they notice the breadcrumb I left for them? Was a certain power-up fully and naturally explained to them? And with these answers come iteration. If the player did not experience the game as designed, then it needs to be changed.
